چکیده

Abstract A new episode of unrest and phreatic/phreatomagmatic/magmatic eruptions occurred at Ambae volcano, Vanuatu, in 2017–2018. We installed a multi-station seismo-acoustic network consisting seven 3-component broadband seismic stations four 3-element (26–62 m maximum inter-element separation) infrasound arrays during the last phase 2018 eruption episode, capturing least six reported major explosions towards end episode. The observed volcanic signals are generally passband 0.5–10 Hz eruptive activity, but corresponding acoustic have relatively low frequencies (< 1 Hz). Apparent very-long-period 0.2 Hz) also we show that they generated as ground-coupled airwaves propagate with atmospheric velocity. observe strongly coherent waves all eruptions. Using waveform similarity signals, detect previously unreported summit vent region based on constant-celerity reverse-time-migration (RTM) analysis. detected bursts temporally related to shallow tremor (frequency content 5–10 Hz), which characterise using simplified amplitude ratio method station pair different distances from vent. increased onset large then decreased, is interpreted source ascent descent. change potentially useful recognise only two quickly. This study reiterates value joint data for improving interpretation activity reducing ambiguity geophysical monitoring.

Seismo-acoustic signatures from near surface phenomena

Among numerous sources emitting pressure waves a few are known to generate acoustic signals both in the earth, as seismic waves, and in the atmosphere, as infrasound, which were recorded over large distances. Those sources are near surface phenomena like volcanic eruptions, explosions, and ocean waves, which all occur at the boundary between the solid earth and the atmosphere, either shallow ab...

Food insecurity, malnutrition and mortality in Maewo and Ambae Islands, Vanuatu.

CONTEXT This paper reports on findings from the ex-post evaluation of the Maewo Capacity Building project in Maewo Island, Vanuatu, which was funded by World Vision Australia. OBJECTIVES To examine the extent to which the infrastructure and systems left behind by the project contributed to the improvement of household food security and health and nutritional outcomes in Maewo Island, using Am...

Resonance and Nonlinear Seismo-Acoustic Land Mine Detection

Since WWII acoustic echo-location method utilized in sonars has been one of the primary approaches for detecting underwater mines. However, earlier attempts to replicate sonar approach and its modifications for detection of landmines were not successful. For example, Caulfield, 1989, House & Pape, 1994, Don & Rogers, 1994 suggested the use of acoustic impulse reflection from soil. A buried obje...

Benchmarks for Validating Range-Dependent Seismo-Acoustic Propagation Codes

The availability of fast and relatively low-cost computing power has resulted in radical changes to the role of seismo-acoustic modeling. With the increase in the number of models available, there is the inevitable question of how can one go about validating all these numerical schemes. Recently, the issue of establishing reference solutions for range-dependent ocean acoustic problems was addre...

Seismo-acoustic ray model benchmarking against experimental tank data.

Acoustic predictions of the recently developed traceo ray model, which accounts for bottom shear properties, are benchmarked against tank experimental data from the EPEE-1 and EPEE-2 (Elastic Parabolic Equation Experiment) experiments. Both experiments are representative of signal propagation in a Pekeris-like shallow-water waveguide over a non-flat isotropic elastic bottom, where significant i...
